Throughout the entire application process, aluminum castings offer unparalleled advantages over other types of castings. Notably, in the realm of new‑energy vehicles, aluminum alloy castings have been widely adopted in automotive manufacturing. Although aluminum castings have a lower specific gravity compared to cast iron and cast steel, they exhibit higher specific strength. Consequently, under identical load conditions, using aluminum alloy castings can significantly reduce structural weight. As a result, aluminum alloy castings are extensively utilized in the aerospace industry, as well as in the production of transmission equipment and transportation machinery. Aluminum castings deliver excellent casting performance throughout the foundry’s operations. With their relatively low melting points, they are well suited for metalworking and pressure casting processes, enhancing internal quality while also enabling greater precision, superior surface finish, and improved production efficiency. Aluminum castings possess a higher latent heat of solidification and vaporization. Under the same conditions, the solidification process of aluminum alloys typically lasts considerably longer than that of steel or cast iron, while maintaining good fluidity—features that favor the production of thick‑walled components and complex geometries. After pouring high‑temperature molten metal into the mold, aluminum castings generate substantial amounts of steam. This steam must be promptly and effectively vented from the mold; molding sand should allow it to pass through. This property is known as permeability. Otherwise, defects such as blowholes and insufficient filling may occur. The permeability of the mold is influenced by factors including sand grain size distribution, clay content, moisture levels, and sand density. The ability of aluminum castings to resist external forces is referred to as compressive strength. Molding sand must maintain sufficiently high compressive strength to prevent collapse during shaping, handling, and assembly, and to avoid damaging the mold surface during casting. However, the compressive strength of the molding sand used in foundries should not be excessively high; otherwise, reduced permeability and tighter dimensional tolerances could lead to casting defects.
